The comedian agreed to the role and even offered to do it for scale pay rather than his typical asking fee, on the condition that his name and image not be used for marketing and that the Genie not take up more than 25% of space on any advertising artwork. Disney wound up breaking both of these conditions, which created a rift between the studio and the actor. Disney attempted to mend the relationship, by sending Williams an original Pablo Picasso painting, but what the actor really wanted was an apology, which he eventually got after Joe Roth took over as Disney Studios chairman.
