STIWELL – After being encouraged by multiple people, one of them being a past winner, Cherokee Nation citizen Tasha Christie submitted her design for the 2024 Cherokee Phoenix Homecoming T-shirt contest and was chosen as this year’s winner.This year’s shirt goes on sale May 1.“Cody Poindexter (Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor and previous T-shirt design winner), he was like, ‘hey, you’ve got to do this T-shirt design.’ And I was like, ‘no, I don’t think I’m going to win.’ That’s just something I don’t do. Like all the stuff I do (is) for just me,” she said. “I actually remember sitting in my office being like, ‘I won, I won.’ I was just overwhelmed with joy because now people get to see that side of me, the artsy side, and they also get to know my story. I love it.”

Christie’s design features a large blue, red and orange bird facing forward with a smaller red and orange bird flanking its right side and a smaller blue bird on its left side. It also showcases a large, seven-pointed star in the background and a small orange and blue seven-pointed star in the foreground.The design is on a heather burgundy shirt and also features “Cherokee Phoenix” in Cherokee syllabary and Cherokee Homecoming at the bottom of the design.Christie came up with her design after visiting Cherokee, North Carolina.
